Each year, in this country alone, millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are killed because there are not enough homes for them all. An estimated 15 million dogs and cats must be killed each year in this country because no one wants them. They are abandoned, abused, neglected, and unknown by many people.

Here are some examples of what people are writing:
| We have just had another Amish puppy mill approved in Lancaster county, PA Febuary 2005 | ||
| Oprah is respected, loved & has great influence. Many of her human guests were abused by family members, partners, co-workers. Abusers often "begin" a lifetime of cruelty by harming animals; often the abuse is dismissed as "mischief". Conversely, the hardest hearts have been redeemed by relationships with animals - look at the prison programs that train shelter dogs. | ||
| Animal Shelters and pounds across the country are burdened with unwanted animals. Most are dumped, or the front door was simply left open. I encourage anyone wanting a animal to walk through a shelter before going to a breeder or pet store. Look on the internet for any breed you are interested in and you will find a rescue filled with animals that deserve the love and care of a new home. | ||
| Please help make the public aware of puppy mills which cause puppies to end up unwanted and sick in shelters across the country having caused terrible suffering to both the animals and their owners who often don't have the $$$ to take care of them and have no other options but to take them to a shelter. Not to mention the lack of breeding ethics and no health testing. | ||
| As a veterinarian and a rescue coordinator for boxers in my state, I deal daily with abused and neglected pets, puppy mill puppies with terrible congenital defects and illnesses---the list if posted entire here would just break your heart (I know mine has been broken many times during the course of my 13 years as a veterinarian). It is so very important to inform people about proper pet care, the importance of spaying/neutering, keeping their pets indoors/on a leash/in a fenced in yard, teaching the cute little puppy its good manners before it becomes a huge unmanageable dog, and so forth. Those of us "in the trenches" are doing our very best but it is so overwhelming, Oprah, you just would not believe. Help us out by getting this out into the public from a person that people listen to. Help our pets out by giving them your voice. | ||
| The influx of animals from other countries is way out of hand. The animals are treated as a commodity and not as a living being. They are brought in with no shots and severe health issues. Many die before they ever reach the broker and are discarded like yesterdays trash. The fact that the U.S.D.A. approves companies such as Hunt to breed thousands of dogs in poor conditions is something that I want to see banned in my lifetime. How could anyone not know about this epidemic? Animals are euthanized everyday because of the unwanted pet population. | ||
| Recently found myself at our county animal shelter. As I walked down the aisles filled with dogs, some calling out to me, others despairing, I felt my heart breaking. A terribly high percentage of these animals are destined to die. I found it hard to meet their eyes, knowing this. In the rooms housing the cats, I saw despair again for an even higher percentage will be killed. There simply are not enough homes and still the breeders continue. | ||
| I serve on the board of directors and volunteer for a local animal rescue organization. Our abuse investigators see so many terrible things done to animals on a daily basis. Every day is a struggle for us. We're not city or state funded and we rely on donations to keep our doors open. Please, please help more people understand why they should never buy a pet from a pet store or a backyard breeder by doing a show on shelter animals. So many wonderful pets are counting on us to place them in loving homes. | ||
| I work for an amazing feline veterinary practice in Arlington Heights,IL and the pain and suffering we see is all too abundant. From people abusing their pets to just blatantly abandoning them. People also need to know the frightening numbers of pets without homes. There should be a ban on the selling of pets for several years so that people who really had true love to share with an animal would adopt one that is already here! If you have love to share it should not be limited to a specific age, breed, or color. We also need better guidelines on reporting abuse. When we see animals that are clearly abused we have no one to call. If it was a pediatrician they could call authorities to report it. I have 9 cats and they all chose me, I did not choose any of them. Some of them are less than personable but each is special and therefore cherished. Our society is way to throw away oriented. People need to get accountable! We work with several rescue organizations and there are never enough volunteers, homes, or dollars. | ||
| As a veterinarian, I am very aware of the overpopulation problem. Additionally, I am often the one that has to inform an owner that their pet has a condition such as hip displasia or congenital heart or kidney disease that will shorten their beloved pet's life. The incidence of congenital abnormalities is much greater from puppy mill puppies. |
